Purchase agreement signed for Commonwealth Health hospitals in Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — A light at the end of the tunnel for the thousands that receive care at Commonwealth Health hospitals in Lackawanna and Luzerne counties. New potential owner, Tenor Health Foundation, put out a release on Friday that it has signed a definitive purchase agreement to acquire the health system.
The sale would include Regional Hospital and Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, along with associated clinics and outpatient centers.
"This is an emergency room that sees 33,000 visitors a year. 2,000 NICU births take place inside of these hospitals," says Bresnahan.
Congressman Rob Bresnahan and his team oversee some of the commonwealth's current locations. Newswatch 16 spoke about the signed purchase agreement with Bresnahan at an unrelated event in Luzerne County.
"What we wanted to make sure was that there was a qualified and capable buyer who understands a community-focused forward mentality," says Bresnahan.
As the hospitals struggle to find the needed funding to stay open, Tenor Health Foundation - based in California - says its mission is to ensure that financially struggling hospitals like these can survive and thrive. Tenor Health Foundation recently reopened a once-closed and bankrupt medical center in Mercer County in western Pennsylvania.
Bresnahan says his office is working alongside Governor Shapiro and State Representative Bridget Kosierowski, who represents the 114th district, as they meet with community health networks to ensure patients don't lose access to the crucial services offered.

Although this is a good sign, state leaders say the next step is ensuring Tenor Health Foundation has the proper funding needed to move forward with the deal.
