Rep. Rob Bresnahan Jr. and Dr. Mehmet Oz tour LCCC nursing program in Nanticoke

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE CO. (WOLF) — Luzerne County Community College’s nursing program hosted Rep. Rob Bresnahan Jr. and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz on Thursday for a tour focused on training and the region’s nursing workforce.

Bresnahan, who represents Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District, walked through classrooms and simulation rooms with Oz at LCCC’s Francis and Mary Gill-Corozza Health Science Center in Nanticoke as students practiced a range of clinical skills, including ultrasound instruction, CPR and other hands-on training using manikins.

“We had an incredible opportunity to meet with some of our next generation nursing students and see the opportunities Luzerne County Community College has to offer,” said Bresnahan. “We got to experience virtual reality and see the passion and energy about the future of health care in northeastern Pennsylvania.”

In one lab, the officials watched students practice CPR, then took turns performing chest compressions themselves. They also observed training tied to pregnancy ultrasounds and simulated childbirth, asking students and staff questions about the program.

The tour ended with a virtual reality demonstration that simulates patient encounters, including a routine checkup. Oz and Bresnahan put on headsets and tried the checkup themselves, as an instructor explained the system can simulate a range of scenarios.

Earlier Thursday, Bresnahan and Oz also toured the Regional Hospital of Scranton as part of Oz’s Northeast Pennsylvania visit. LCCC leaders say the nursing program is increasing capacity and adding specialized training for long-term and acute care, with the new training set to launch in spring 2026.
