Work starts on opening key D&L Trail link, inching eastern Pa. closer to 165-mile connection

Construction has begun on a previously undeveloped section of the D&L Trail in Luzerne County, bringing the region closer to completing a 165-mile trail system connecting Bristol to Wilkes-Barre.

The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, working with the Anthracite Scenic Trails Association, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development and Hanover Township, on Wednesday ceremoniously broke ground on the Black Diamond Trail segment running from Oliver Mills to Mountain Top, according to a news release from the non-profit heritage corridor.

“We are very excited about the progress made here in Luzerne County,” said Tony Pierucci, executive director of DLNHC. “This milestone reflects our ongoing commitment to stewarding the D&L Trail as we work to make this vital resource fully connected and accessible for everyone.”

The segment, which currently sees limited use, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. When finished, it will offer an improved unpaved surface for hiking, biking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing through wooded mountains south of Wilkes-Barre. A hiking-only spur trail will provide access to a recreation area where bicycles are not permitted.

U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan said in a statement that the project represents an investment in the region’s future. “This project will expand outdoor recreation, connect communities, preserve our region’s history and support local tourism and economic growth,” he said.
