Pennsylvania is celebrating the release of Pittsburgh-area teacher Marc Fogel, who was wrongfully detained in a Russian prison for three years.
Russian authorities arrested Fogel and sentenced him to 14 years for possessing a small amount of medical marijuana to cope with pain from a severe back injury.
One of those celebrating is fellow western Pennsylvanian, U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick (R-Pa.), who met Fogel’s 95-year-old mother while campaigning and continued to advocate for Fogel’s release.

Leaders in Scranton and Lackawanna County became the latest in Pennsylvania to call for scrutiny and investigation of a proposed natural gas rate increase. UGI Utilities last month proposed raising residential rates by 10.8%. The monthly bill for a residential customer using 73.7 ccf (hundreds of cubic feet) per month would increase from $104.47 to $115.74. Rates for typical commercial customers would increase 8.6%, and 7.5% for typical industrial customers. The new rates — which amount to an estimated $110.4 million for UGI — would take effect March 28.

WASHINGTON, DC: Today, U.S. Representative Rob Bresnahan, Jr. (PA-08) voted in favor of H.R. 27, the Halt All Lethal Trafficking (HALT) Fentanyl Act. This bipartisan legislation, which passed the House by a vote of 312-108, would remove incentives for the creation of new, dangerous substances by permanently designating fentanyl analogues in schedule 1 of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).
A Republican-led bill to impose harsher sentences for people convicted of fentanyl-like drug crimes narrowly passed the House on Thursday evening, with 98 Democrats supporting the measure. The GOP-sponsored Halt All Lethal Trafficking, or HALT, Fentanyl Act (H.R.27) will permanently classify drugs that are only slightly chemically different from fentanyl as Schedule I substances, the category reserved for the most dangerous types of drugs. The bill passed 312 to 108.

DALLAS, PA: Today, U.S. Representative Rob Bresnahan, Jr. (PA-08) announced office hours in Monroe and Luzerne Counties for the first two weeks of February. While still in the process of setting up individual offices throughout the Eighth Congressional District, Rep. Bresnahan is partnering with the offices of State Senators Lisa Baker and Rosemary Brown to hold hours for constituents to meet directly with staff.
